INTAKE MANIFOLDS
The intake pipe is the access conduit for the fuel-air mixture into the engine through the door represented by the valve.
The total efficiency of a motor is the result of several partial efficiencies, namely:
volumetric efficiency
thermodynamic efficiency
mechanical performance
The volumetric efficiency represents the volume of mixture that we manage to introduce into the combustion chamber, and the displacement of the engine.
One of the main factors on which the volumetric efficiency depends is the loss due to friction of the fluid (fuel air mixture) at the inlet of the air filter to the combustion chamber; it follows that one of the parts which weighs considerably on this loss is the intake pipe. Since all the inlet mix must pass through this component and this, minimizing the loss, it is imperative to avoid sudden increases in section as well as elbows along the path of the mix.
The intake pipe also serves as an accumulation device for the unburned charge. Indeed, since the mixing column passes at a certain speed, it takes a certain time to stop when the valve closes; it follows that a certain quantity of mixture remains in the collector and compresses against the lamellae. This is why each manifold has a well-defined number of turns range within which it reaches its maximum efficiency (tuned pipe).
The pipe also serves to support the carburettor by connecting it to the crankcase or the cylinder; when necessary, it must therefore also dampen the vibrations transmitted by the crankcase to the carburettor in order to avoid the phenomenon of the fuel and air emulsion in the carburettor tank.
It is therefore understandable that this component, apparently simple, requires an in-depth study so that it is possible to fully exploit all its qualities, which the Malossi technicians have completely succeeded in doing.
