The Malossi crankshaft for the 100 cc cylinder consists mainly of two half forged special steel shafts, machined on high-precision CNC machine tools, then subjected to a thermochemical process of cation, quenching and cooling under zero in nitrogen. This process gives the half-trees exceptional hardness and strength, essential to withstand the high power generated by the 100 cc cylinder.
The surfaces of the crankshaft are then rectified by means of a high precision tooling, in particular the bearing seats which have tolerances of the order of a few thousandths of millimetre (-0.001 mm) and an exceptionally low rough running. This level of precision ensures flexible operation and minimizes friction, thus increasing engine longevity.
The semi-trees are assembled to the rod using special tools that guarantee ultra precise coupling. The CNC wires, machined in aeronautical steel, are treated thermochemically to obtain exceptional hardness and hardening thickness values, while the sliding surfaces of the needle rollers of the rods are completely roded with very low roughness, in order to improve slippage and minimize friction: for the same reason, the rods are equipped with specific lubrication channels in the most stressed areas.
The crankshaft balancing has been designed and built to optimize the performance of high-power engines, and provides up to 16,000 rpm of dynamics. Such balancing allows smooth and regular operation even at stratospheric regimes, making the Malossi crankshaft ideal for racing at the highest level.
The needle cages, mounted on the coupling axis of the crankshaft, are made with rollers with a special anti-torsion profile, selected with tolerances of a few millimetres. The silver steel cage acts as a lubricating and anti-wear element to ensure optimal performance, even under reduced lubrication conditions.
